With 13 ongoing initiatives and many other achievements, the ITTF Foundation reviewed a successful past year in a virtual meeting with more than 100 participants from all over the world; just over a month before the ITTF Annual General Meeting (AGM) opens in Houston, Texas in 2021.
As the ITTF’s social responsibility arm, the foundation harnesses the power of sport to bring about positive change in many ways. Members of the board of directors of the ITTF Foundation directed the procedures, which were consistently complemented by staff from the ITTF Foundation.
“During the pandemic, the ITTF Foundation did a wonderful job supporting the table tennis community. We live according to the ITTF motto – table tennis. For all. For LIFE and we promise to support the table tennis community, our athletes and our member associations, ”said Thomas Weikert, President of the ITTF & ITTF Foundation.
The TT Dream Building program was completely restarted this year with integrative, sustainable field projects, from working with refugees in the Azraq Camp in Jordan to new initiatives with people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease in France.
The #TableTennisUnited fundraiser raised more than $ 400,000 to support more than 100 projects worldwide. In addition, the emergency fund was used to help communities that suffered from the Beirut explosion and the earthquake in Croatia last year.
World Table Tennis Day 2021 – celebrated annually on April 6th since 2015 – was dominated by #FEMpowerment and took place online with a 24-hour live stream.
“This year will go down as a milestone in history that for the first time gender equality, women’s empowerment and sustainability in table tennis have been addressed comprehensively and holistically across the ITTF group,” said the ITTF Vice President and the ITTF – Board of Trustees of the Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees Petra Sörling.
During the videoconference, the ITTF Foundation signed the Brighton plus Helsinki Declaration pledging to be a true advocate for equality between women and girls in sport and physical activity.
Next year’s World Table Tennis Day will focus on promoting the use of table tennis for development and peace, in line with the biennial celebration of the 50th anniversary of ping pong diplomacy. Organizations can already register their events here.
“The ITTF Foundation team improves the lives of the people it encounters,” said Ryu Seung-min, IOC member and ambassador for the ITTF Foundation. This year the foundation was nominated for four prizes for this great work.
