Long has spent the past four seasons as a punch coach for the Washington Nationalswhere he worked with Harper and was on the team in 2019 when they won the World Series.
Before joining Washington, Long, 54, spent three seasons as a punch coach with the New York Mets and he served as a punch coach for eight seasons with the New York Yankees. He worked under Phillies manager Joe Girardi for seven years (2008-14) when they were with the Yankees and won the 2009 World Series.
“I’ve had a long-standing relationship with Kevin and have seen his work up close and personal for years,” said Girardi. “I really think he’s the best in the business and will have a huge impact on our offensive.”
Girardi and Long weren’t quite as welcoming during a game at Citizens Bank Park in late June. After the national star at the time Max Scherzer was checked by the referees for sticky substances, Girardi and Long got into a screaming fight.
The Phillies fired punch coach Joe Dillon on the last day of the regular season. Philadelphia finished second in the NL East at 82-80 and seventh in the NL in the runs and ninth in batting average.
