Anett Kontaveit passed third-placed Karolina Pliskova 6: 4, 6: 0 on Friday and led the way to the semi-finals of WTA finals at the end of the season. The eighth seeded Estonian won her twelfth WTA match win in a row when she was sure to finish in the top two of her group in the round robin phase. Kontaveit, whose winning streak included titles in Moscow and Cluj-Napoca, had beaten the French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova in her tournament opener.
It only took her 57 minutes to rush past Pliskova, win 24 of her 29 first service points and take the last eight games for her first career win against the Czech in four encounters.
The group action resumed later on Friday, with Krejcikova taking on Garbine Muguruza.
The elite tournament was relocated from its usual home in Shenzhen, China to Guadalajara this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
World number one Ashleigh Barty from Australia is not defending her title due to ongoing pandemic travel restrictions.
