Casper Ruud meets Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals ATP finals after coming from behind to beat Andrey Rublev 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/5) on Friday. Both players knew a win at Pala Alpitour in Turin would take them to the semifinals on Saturday and impressed Ruud when he came from behind to make sure he would face the world number two at the end of the season. The fifth seed Rublev had entered the game unbeaten in his four previous encounters with Ruud, but suffered a deserved defeat after a strong start and failed to qualify for the knockout round of the Green Group.
The way Rublev sauntered through the first set suggested a quick win, but Ruud fought his way back playfully in the second set, forcing his higher-ranking opponent to make casual mistakes and scoring 13 winners when he broke Rublev twice for the Win set.
Visibly angry at the way his performance was wearing off, Rublev took his frustration out on his racket after immediately allowing Ruud to level the set to 2-2 in the fourth game when the game was around his neck .
From then on, Ruud gained further confidence and wasn’t even surprised when his serve was broken in game five of the third set and hit right back to level the score.
He eventually came through the tie-breaker after a tense round of service games in which both players made some nice throws to start a big fight with US Open champion Medvedev.
