The No. 3 pick in this year’s draft was injured when his arm was handcuffed while fighting the Celtics Center Enes Kanter under the basket. Trainer J.B. Bickerstaff called the injury “a freak thing” because it happened in a game together.
“Boys get tangled up to get rebounds, to fight loose balls and stuff,” Bickerstaff said on a Zoom call. “It wasn’t a dirty game, nothing like that – two boys are playing basketball and that happens.”
The Cavs said an MRI done Tuesday confirmed the original diagnosis of a sprain. Mobley will begin treatment and rehab, and the team estimates he will be back on the field in “approximately 2-4 weeks”.
“We play this game for a reason, because of the love and compassion you have for it, and it’s always frustrating and disappointing when it’s taken away from you, when it’s an injury and it’s out of your control,” said Bickerstaff to make sure he’s okay and we want him to be in a good mood. ”
Mobley’s loss is a major blow to the Cavs as it gave them a surprisingly strong 9-6 start. The 20-year-old has an average of 14.6 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.6 blocks.
The Cavs have faced a number of injuries lately.
Leading goalscorer Collin Küster remains incapacitated with a tear in the meniscus in her left knee. The Cavs haven’t updated his status in a week.
Also center Jarrett Allen missed the game on Monday due to illness and will not make the trip to a game in Brooklyn on Wednesday.
After Mobley was injured, the Cavs finished with only nine players against the Celtics.
“Everyone has to do their part,” said Bickerstaff. “We’re obviously down (Mobley), but we’re down. It’s the NBA, with 82 games, at some point everyone’s going to get a chance. And everyone has to take a step up and do a little more.
“We can’t expect one person to replace Evan or Kevin or Lauri or any of the other guys who fell out. We have to be a group where everyone does a little bit more and try to fill that void.”
Bickerstaff said Ed Davis and 7-foot-6 Tacko Fall could get extra playtime. After encountering the Nets, the Cavs host the Golden State Warriors on Thursday before taking a welcome three-day break.
